In his letter, the Hungarian member of the EP recalled his recent exchange with the Patriarch in Syria, where he was "deeply impressed by the testimony and faith of the Syriac Orthodox Church, enduring constant threats in the midst of civil war." Sending his message from the plenary session of the EP in Brussels, Mr. Hölvényi reminded: "In times of expanding religious intolerance and hatred, ever more members of the European Parliament are recognising the tragic situation that ancient Christian communities in the Middle East are in, also reflected by recent common positions and resolutions on this matter."
Mr Hölvényi also reaffirmed his and his fellow members’ determination to stand up for persecuted Christians by raising political awareness, spreading information and providing humanitarian assistance. "I truly hope that Europe will ever better recognise its special responsibility toward Eastern Christians before it is too late," he added.
