BBC Interview with MEP György Schöpflin on Immigration and Hungary’s Border Fence

2015. 09. 01.

Responding to the reporter’s questions about why Hungary cannot simply let the migrants pass through the country, MEP Schöpflin reminds the BBC reporter that Hungary has certain obligations under the EU’s Schengen agreement to protect and secure the border of the EU Schengen Area. Calling the border fence "a necessary, though in no way a very happy step,” he says that the fence aims to prevent illegal border crossings into the EU by channeling migrants to the official border crossings where they can be properly registered.
