Expression of solidarity following suicide attack on Syriac Orthodox Patriarch

Last Sunday, a suicide bomber attacked a church in Quamishli, Syria, where Patriarch Aphrem II Karim of the Syriac Orthodox Church was commemorating the mass atrocities against Syriac and Armenian Christians, perpetrated by the Ottomans 100 years ago. Three members of the security forces were killed and five others wounded. In his letter addressed to the Patriarch, György Hölvényi, co-chair of the EPP Group working group for interreligious dialogue in the European Parliament, expressed his solidarity with the supreme leader of the Syriac Orthodox Church and sent his condolences to the victims.

Partnership of EU and churches necessary in providing humanitarian aid

The European Union should consider local churches as a key partner when providing humanitarian assistance for the persecuted Christians and other religious minorities in the Middle East, stressed György Hölvényi, co-chair of the European People's Party Working Group on interreligious dialogue at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
